"New book chronicles Plano girl's battle with disability that's left her unable to speak" - Dallas Morning News (March 8, 2008). Annette Nevins reporting.
---
With apologies to everyone else who has written about Schuyler over the past few weeks and months, I have to say that this story, which apparently ran in yesterday's Dallas Morning News, is my favorite so far, if for no other reason than the video. We pretty much disrupted class for the better part of a morning to get this, so I'm glad it worked out. (I hadn't disrupted a class and gotten away with it in a long time, so it was nostalgic. And I didn't even have to make any fake fart noises to do it, either.)
Today is my signing in Austin, at the store where I once toiled for The Man. Funny how things turn out sometimes.

Very cool :) Thanks for sharing!
We'll see you at the B&N in a couple hours!
(Assuming Miss Crankypants cooperates.)
That picture is one of my favorites of the two of you!
You loving on her and Schuyler looking for her next adventure!!
She looks amazing in that still. I have to go back and watch the video from work - won't work at home... But the article was great. :)
Any excuse to see Schuyler in action. It's a great article and a great video.
My favorite part:
"Camryn Evans, 8, came to the rescue, giving Schuyler a pink and purple eraser shaped like a cellphone. Schuyler held it to her ear and began to sign with her hands.
"I know Schuyler's language easy," Camryn said, coaxing her to punch more buttons. "She's talking about Peter Pan.""
It's amazing how they protect each other, interpret for each other, help each other at that age--regardless of their neurological status.
Nice story and great video. Hope the signings went well, too!
I got my book on Saturday! WHOO HOO!!!!!!!!
I could not put it down...but then I had to in order to take care of the 2 year old and 5 year old that were tormenting my 7 month old. (kidding...kind of). But seriously...so far so good! And, of all the pictures you have posted of you and Schuyler, this one is my favorite by far! She looks so alive - it really seems to capture that Schuyler energy you always talk about. Safe travels on your book tour!
Caught your interview a few weeks back on book channel and did some surfing; was about to get the book when my sister in NJ told me she was reading it, too! Conincidence? I think not. Both of us are in love with both your writing style and Schuyler!
BTW, I teach in Richardson, so we are neighbors. It's true that teachers do have the best in mind for our kids, and also true that some (not all!) would rather make academic decisions for kids. Bravo to you and Julie for lovingly advocating for Schuyler. I agree that she is advocating for herself by all that she is accomplishing.
I know you were totally a little bit "neener" about being back in that store, man. You probably weren't even subtle.
Actually, I really loved working in that store, and so it was both very cool and a little sad to be back there again.
Your toiling paid off Rob. Was great to see you yesterday. I couldn't believe that the kids sat so long. Must be you are so captivating or was it the 20 Kleenex's we let them tear apart? Safe travels and I bought the book too. I'll pick up the signed copy this week. After reading I will donate it to my library.
Cheers to you!

Again, apologies for the noisy kid. If I'd had any sense I'd have taken her out of there, but I really wanted to get my book signed.
But I'm about a 100 pages in now, and loving it. Superfly had me laughing until I cried.
I came THIS close to reading Superfly at the event. Maybe I'll read it here in San Antonio tomorrow night.
Oh the video, the video. She is so beautiful, carries herself with so much confidence and grace.
Great article, great picture. Schuyler definitely looks like she's about to go look for adventure. And I can't wait to watch the video.
I hope all of the rest of your fancy-pants touring and signing goes well. Enjoy it!
Thats such a good article, I loved the video! She's such a charmer!
I liked the bit where she was talking about peter pan and the Camryn said he/she (who knows these days) spoke "schuylers language" are they classmates or close? I thought that was sweet, and the fact that he/she encouraged her to try again.I always had visions of kids in schuylers position being in such a difficult position, but she gets on with it like all the other kids in the class so that you cant even know a difference, with the added advantage that she is officially the cutest one there!
Have fun on the signing tour! I want my book signed, if you wouldnt mind popping over the UK in your spare time? haha
Take care
xx
