We took Schuyler to her first baseball game last night.
We sat in the cheap seats, ate lots of nasty ballpark food, got Schuyler her very own Texas Rangers ballcap (in purple, of course), and had a lot of fun. The Rangers lost by one run, but only after coming back from a seven run gap in a single inning. It was a good game and we had a great time, which we were all definitely due.
Most importantly, however, we took the opportunity to teach Schuyler a very important skill, one that she will be able to use anywhere in the world. It was a skill she took to instantly, too.
She learned to boo the Yankees.

Booing the Yankees. As another expatriate New Englader, booing the Yankees is as much of a pastime as the game itself.
Learning to boo the Yankees is perhaps one of the most essential social skills anyone can learn.
Now key in the phrase "Johnny Demon" into her Big Box of Words, and you guys are ready for a trip to Boston.
My husband, the Brewers fan, says to tell you that it is inspiring to see a father teach his daughter the truly, truly important things in life. He's glad you have such good values.

If your Schuyler ever ends up in The City of Brotherly Love, she'll have to learn to boo all the home teams, (unless they're on a winning streak, for which period of time they will be venerated) and root for East Coast teams in playoff games, EXCEPT if the playoffs involve a New York team. Then, she'll have to root for the non-East Coast team - because Philly has a standing boo-order in place for all New York teams, especially the Yankees. We have complicated cultural rules here.

Booing the Yankees is a talent most appreciated in my household.
Except by my boyfriend, who is a Yankees fan. But he sleeps on the couch from May to October, anyway.
