As an Independent voter with Libertarian tendencies and the mother of an 18 year old male, I had to vote for every Democrat on my ballot to help send a message to my home state and Washington. If the Democrats can't handle this responsibility, I hope we have some OTHER viable candidates in 2008.
A number of the new Congress people ran by claiming to be 'true conservatives', i.e. pro-gun, anti-abortion, anti-tax, anti-big goverment, strong military types.
For example Jim Webb, the probable Senator from Virginia's stated position on most issues is far to the right of George Bush on just about everything except Iraq.
It will be interesting to see if these new members will remain true to these promises, or will they "run right, govern left" in the Clinton tradition.
Rumsfeld has left the building. Years too late and far too many dead in his wake, but at least it's over for him.
As the spouse of a two-time Iraqi war veteran, I feel strongly that if nothing else happens in the next two years, that fact alone made today a mighty, although bittersweet, victory.
As for not fucking it up, undoing six years worth of seriously fucking it up can't be done in two years. But at least we can start to apply the emergency break to the run away train wreck that is GWB & Co.
Now that I read it again, I think Christopher is going back six years to my season spent on the Nader campaign in 2000. I still hear from the Nader Haters now and again. Not sure who they send hate mail to for 2004.
Which, really, goes to the heart of why I fear the Dems will screw this up somehow.
I don't consider myself a "Nader hater." Although, to be honest, I would like to go back and kick the shins of the Nader supporters who kept urging me to "vote my hopes and not my fears."
My fear was that my husband would wind up in a senseless war in Iraq.
And we all know how that turned out.
Anyway, I'm feeling more hopeful tonight than I have in a long time (which ain't saying much, but still.) For now, that's enough.
I voted straight ticket Dem, but I'm still totally in agreement with Rob. Take it easy, start undoing the evil that has been inflicted on our country and the world by the repubs over the last twelve years, and generally try not to tick everyone off in the middle.
That's hard for me to say, being so very lefty as I am, but I understand a little moderation is in order, to avoid a shock to the system. We can worry about a national gay marriage act in the future.
I just ordered a new bumper sticker, actually, to replace my election-related snottiness. I'm replacing it with one that more generally expresses my liberal socialist pinko creed. I originally saw it on the business card of a social worker worked for in college.

I kept thinking about that red and blue election map for the 2006 Presidential election (http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mejn/election/) It seemed impossible that there would be a power shift but now we have it. And it comes down to those very true words "Don't fuck it up" As someone else mentioned they have to start correcting problems over the next 2 years without alienating the voters in all those formerly red states. Because what the Republicans have done in 12 years can't be undone in 2 years. 2008 is the next hurdle. Have to say though that I am one happy and proud American. The freakin system worked!
