Blogging about blogging about writing? Fascinating!

Originally uploaded by Citizen Rob.
I wrote a long post over at Monster Notes, my bookety book crap blog, about my publisher's decision to assign a subtitle to SCHUYLER'S MONSTER and my thoughts on the direction I hope that goes. Go read it if you're interested in the process, especially if you think you might have some good suggestions. God knows, I've personally got the crappy ones covered all by myself.

It's been a quiet, quiet Sunday afternoon around here. Schuyler and I watched King Kong on HBO earlier, and as usual, she cheered for Kong when he delivered the smack to his dinosaur friends. Watching Kong together is one of Schuyler and my most sacred rituals.

Before you send me indignant hate mail, I realize that it's perhaps not the most appropriate movie for a seven year old. But one more minute of Noggin and I was going to end up with my picture on CNN, with helicopters circling the building.

Besides, I'm not convinced that those rules really apply to Schuyler. She's experienced uglier monsters than Kong.

  1. I've been watching King Kong --- both versions --- with my daughter since she was three. The 1933 one was her first favorite movie.

Heck, I think KING KONG makes sense. Schuyler's...seven and a half, or thereabouts? I was getting a little sick of the kids stuff when I was that age myself.

(Oh, and a heads-up about the Schuyler's Monster booknotes entry -- when the page loads, a pale blue box pops up on the screen which obscures the first paragraph. At least it does on my computer.)

Weird. Does anyone else see that? I'm creating that site with Apple's iWeb application, and while I like how it looks (at least on my mac), I'm not sure I completely trust it.

  4. I get the weird blue box, too. It's the same color as the blue in the title box. Otherwise, it's a great layout- very Mr. Fancy-Pants Author-Guy.

  5. Another with the weird blue box. I can hilight the text behind it, cut and paste it into Word so that I can read it, but can't see it on the blog.

Again with the blue box on the book blog...

  7. Does anyone see the blue box on any other page on the book site (schuylersmonster.com) besides the Monster notes entries?

  8. No, I only see it on that one blog entry, not on any other page, not even other blog entries. For me it covers the first paragraph and the first line of the second. And trying to select the text underneath it was a bit tricky also, since it didn't want to select it if my cursor was anywhere in the blue (it preferred to select all the text in the other direction, instead).

  9. Blue box here too (although really, it's kind of a light turquoise....)

If it helps -- it looks like it's the same color as the "Index - Gallery - About" navigational strip in the masthead at the top of the page.

  11. BLUE BOX PEOPLE:

    Do you see it now?

    No blue box here.

But I guess that doesn't count, since I never saw it.

  13. Nope, all better now. I enjoyed the first paragraph much more!

Blue box is gone. Sorry to give you extra work!

  15. All gone for me, Rob. Now the text of your quoted material in the middle is a dark blue color, but that's A-OK with me. But if it's not intentional, I wanted to give you a heads-up.

  16. On the Schuyler watching King Kong stuff, it's one more reason why I think she rocks. You have said before that you all have watched it/let her watch it and what amazes me is that she loves it, cheers him on and my own seven year old BOY wants NOTHING to do with it. He's all tear 'em up, does his battle scenes with his pirates, star wars guys, justice leaguers, but King Kong? Freaks OUT. She is right on track to grow up and take down anyone who says she can't do xyz. I know I have said this before but I read here now and again and I am definitely one of her cheerleaders from afar. --

I'm not sure I'm fully understanding what Schuyler's diagnosis is. I just wanted to stop by to let you know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers, if that's ok. I have four boys myself. My oldest has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and my youngest was born with a cleft lip and palate. I suppose I'm on a bit of a quest right now to try and connect with other parents of special needs children. Maybe then I'll quit feeling quite so cut off being physically surrounded by people who have no idea what our family goes through. Schuyler sounds like a wonderful little girl and I hope she's around for a long time. Ta for now dahling!

when you said Noggin, I immediately thought of Noggin the Nog.(www.nogginthenog.co.uk) I realise that isn't what you meant, but please, try to get hold of some tape or CD or something, it's good!

  19. I think most of us parents often fail to appreciate the benefits of 'down time' both for them and ourselves.
    Best wishes
